Case Study – Kitchen

A Scandinavian design inspired kitchen that provides functionality and strong contrast

Project Brief:

For this new home build kitchen design, the homeowner advised that they really liked the minimalist look and tones of Scandinavian design. They wanted to create some drama and contrast into the space while maintaining a clean linear look.

The core of this design lies in its intentional contrast. By pairing high-depth tones with natural textures, the space achieves a balanced “groundedness” that many all-white kitchens lack. The use of Char Blue for the peninsula and base cabinetry provides a sophisticated, weighted foundation. It draws the eye downward, making the room feel stable and expansive. The light Aged Ash upper cabinetry introduces an organic warmth. The handle-less upper cabinets maintain a sleek, uninterrupted silhouette. The u-shaped layout maximizes efficiency while the extended benchtop transforms the prep area into a social hub. The walk-in pantry off the kitchen provides storage space to ensure that the kitchen can remain clutter free. The homeowner loves his new kitchen and plans to add a splashback to match the benchtop and a hanging herb garden as funds allow.

Designer’s Note: The choice to keep the upper cabinets in a light wood finish—rather than matching the navy below—is what keeps this kitchen feeling airy. It prevents the dark tones from “closing in” the space, making it feel larger than its actual footprint.

The result is a sophisticated and functional space with bold contrast and inviting warmth.
