Case Study – Bathroom

This compact bathroom gets a minimalist update allowing it to feel larger than its footprint

Project Brief:

Prompted by a leaky shower this apartment owner wanted a design to clear the clutter from this compact bathroom/laundry. She also wanted to the design to focus on how to make this small space feel bigger.

This renovated bathroom is a masterclass in visual decompression, turning a challenging footprint into a sanctuary that feels expansive and serene. To achieve this within a compact space (particularly one that integrates a laundry component), the design leans heavily on clever optical illusions and functional minimalism to dramatically alter spatial perception. The use of the floating vanity tricks the eye, making the entire room feel wider and less crowded. The handleless profile of the vanity adds to its feeling of lightness. Another visual trick is the installation of an expansive, full-width mirror above the vanity. Placed strategically over the white subway tile backsplash, this mirror serves a dual purpose: it visually doubles the depth of the room and reflects and bounces ambient light around, creating a brighter, airier atmosphere. The wide span ensures that the entire area, including the integrated counter space, is reflected, maximizing the impact. Horizontal lines are used consistently to create a ‘stretched’ perception of length. This is evident in the parallel grid lines of the mini subway tiles, and even in to the horizontal wood grain of the vanity. This intentional alignment draws the eye along the perimeter, making the space feel longer and less constricted. Lastly the simple colour palette of warm white and light grey allows the colours to recede making the space feel larger.

The result is a light filled retreat that punches above its compact footprint.
